Four Sun Devils placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes at the Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday, and the ASU wrestling team finished 11th overall.
ASU junior Anthony Robles (125-pounds) placed the highest for ASU, claiming second behind Indiana senior Angel Escobedo.
No. 4 Ohio State won the tournament by one point over No. 9 Cornell, 122.5-121.5.
No. 12 Oklahoma (109.5), No. 7 Boise State (97.5) and No. 11 Nebraska (94) rounded out the top five.
The Sun Devils finished in 11th place with 69.5 points while competing without a wrestler at the 157- or 174-pound weight classes.
ASU coach Shawn Charles said the team did well without two guys that could have placed in their weight classes.
“We did great,” Charles said. “I think all our guys wrestled well.”
Sophomores Kyle DeBerry (165) and Eric Starks (174) did not compete because of injury.
Sophomore Te Edwards (157) moved up a weight class and recorded three victories but did not place.
Robles recorded three pins and one technical fall to reach the final at 125, but a close 4-2 decision resulted in the first loss of the season for Robles and dropped his record to 10-1.
Three other Sun Devils also placed in their weight classes.
Junior Ben Ashmore (133) placed eighth with three victories, junior Chris Drouin (141) placed sixth after falling to Boise State junior Levi Jones twice, and senior Erik Nye (285) placed sixth but lost his last two matches in the tournament.
Nye was forced to forfeit his final match for medical reasons.
“We pulled him out to make sure we have him for the long haul,” Charles said.
The losses in the tournament were also Drouin’s first of the season.
Charles said his coaching staff was proud of the way his team wrestled.
“We are really happy that they went out a wrestled hard,” he said.
The team returns to Nevada on Dec. 20 to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions.
