Pedestrian hit by light-rail train in Tempe

A 21-year-old man riding a skateboard was hit by a light rail train Thursday night near South Rural Road and East Tyler Street near the Tempe campus, police reported.

The incident marked the first time a pedestrian has been hit by a light rail train since it started operating in December, Metro Light Rail spokeswoman Hillary Foose said.

The man was crossing the street against a “don’t walk” sign when he was struck by an eastbound light-rail train, Tempe police spokesman Sgt. Steve Carbajal said.

“My initial reports tell me that he was OK, with very minor injuries,” Foose said.

Passengers on the train had to get off and wait for another train to pick them up.

No other information was available Thursday night.
