The Associated Students of Arizona State University Downtown executive board held a special session Tuesday to appoint seven new senators, filling nearly all vacant senate seats.
The 12-person senate now has only two open seats, one representing University College and one from the College of Teacher Education and Leadership.
New senators were appointed to represent Barrett, the Honors College, the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the College of Teacher Education and Leadership, University College, the College of Nursing and Health Innovation and the freshman class.
ASASUD vice president and journalism sophomore Beth Wischnia said she’s happy with the new senators.
“It’s exciting because I think they bring a lot to the table,” Wischnia said. “We have a lot of freshmen, which is good. We have a lot of representation, which we didn’t necessarily have before.”
Freshman senator Amy Villarreal said she’s excited to be in a leading organization on the Downtown campus.
“I think because it’s a small campus there is a lot of opportunity to really get to know students,” she said.
ASASUD has decided to have rolling deadlines for applicants interested in filling the last two open positions and Wischnia said she’s optimistic they will be filled.
The government will set a day and time each month when interested candidates can come and be interviewed, she said.
“We’re waiting a little longer to see how many more applicants we get,” Wischnia said. “We’ve had five applications so far since the last deadline passed. But with the interest shown, I’m confident we will have them filled.”
