Vue ups enforcement after weekend arrests

After arresting nearly 90 people at The Vue apartments over the first weekend of the semester, Tempe police said Wednesday the situation in the complex has calmed down.

During the holiday weekend, Tempe Police kept a close eye on The Vue apartment complex, Tempe Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Carbajal said.

“There was a big difference from the other weekend,” Carbajal said, “aside from 16 arrests on Thursday, there were no other arrests made during the holiday weekend.”

Carbajal said Tempe Police is trying to get the word out that it will not overlook the type of behavior that occurred on the first weekend of the semester.

“The apartment complex has really stepped up to ensure the safety of their residents,” Carbajal said, which has made the partnership between the police and The Vue management very effective in preventing illegal behavior.

Journalism junior Jeremy Thompson, who lives on the 11th floor at The Vue, said excessive drinking, fighting and breaking glass has still been occurring at the apartments.

“It’s unfortunate when some people who get a certain freedom have to ruin it for everyone else,” Thompson said.

People have still been throwing things from their balconies down at the cars on the street, he said.

“It really is a huge safety issue,” Thompson said.

With possibly dangerous incidents like this, Thompson said he would still contact the police despite the complex’s management’s request to contact staff first.

For less dangerous situations, however, he said he would contact apartment management first.

Elementary education sophomore Britta Schafer, who lives in the apartment complex, said it has been fairly quiet during the week and she doesn’t hear much beyond music or people walking around.

But on the weekends, Schafer said it’s a different story. There are parties in people’s rooms and at the pool, she said, and people are usually drinking.

Eric Starbuck, a business junior, lives across from The Vue in the new Barrett, the Honors College complex, and said he can see the pool and the whole western side of the apartment complex.

“I actually witnessed a beer bong going from one of the apartments down to the pool deck,” Starbuck said, “It was rather impressive.”

Starbuck said that even though some residents engage in dangerous behavior, ultimately it is their decision to do so.

“Hopefully they will make safe choices,” he said.

Jennifer Sanford, the office manager of The Vue, said management hasn’t changed any of its methods of trying to prevent these incidents, but is just reinforcing the things that they were already doing.

There is more security and monitoring of the exits to make sure that people who shouldn’t be at the complex are kept out, she said.

“We’re trying to educate our tenants and ensure equal enjoyment for everybody,” Sanford said.
