Hoodlums showcases music documentaries

Local independent record store Hoodlums Music and Movies recently launched its first viewing in a series of five music-related films this summer.

The CopperDocs series at Hoodlums is the brainchild of Mary Papenhausen and film critic David Malsch, who formed CopperDocs as a pet project to screen films in Tempe.

According to a post from Hoodlums co-owner Steve Wiley on the Hoodlums Web site: “Since our mission fits right into that scheme, and we have a place to show some films, we said ‘Let’s try it.’”

The first showing was the music documentary “loudQuietloud! A Film About the Pixies.” The films are shown on the back wall of the store, where the stage is located, and admission is free. The viewings are open to the public.

Hoodlums will screen the 40th anniversary DVD of Michael Wadleigh’s acclaimed documentary “Woodstock,” on June 26, at 5 p.m.

“It’s super long… but awesome,” Wiley said.

The documentary includes notable performances from Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Joan Baez, among others.

Films will continue through the month of August. July’s roster begins on the 8th with “Iron Maiden 666,” a documentary chronicling the band’s travels in a custom Boeing 757 for the “Somewhere Back In Time World Tour.”

Heavy Metal mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap” will be shown on July 15. The band’s reunion album “Back from the Dead” was released June 16.

“Anita O’Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer” ends the month on the 22nd.

August’s films are a Beastie Boys documentary, “Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwrittern,” and Wilco’s “Ashes of American Flags.”

Apart from the “Woodstock” showing, all of the films start at 8 p.m. inside Hoodlums, which is located at the southwest corner of McClintock Drive and Guadalupe Road in Tempe.
