Artists in jail: "Pretty"

Read the full story on the performance at Estrella Jail

The act of performing was meaningful to “Pretty,” who sang a solo during Saturday evening’s performance as part of the Journey Home arts residency program at Estrella Jail. She said she’s always harbored a secret love of music that she used to keep as a secret from everyone, including friends and family.

“Music makes me feel happy,” she said. “I dream about it. That’s all I dream about. [Performing in front of others] opened me up from mind, heart and soul.”

Pretty said that before the Journey Home program, she felt a lot of hatred toward others. Through the art classes, however, she said she learned to love others unconditionally and break away from the fears of her past through song.

“No matter what you [have to] say — just say it,” she said. “That’s how I express myself.”
