Artists in jail: Alix

Alix said she wanted to sign up for a creative-writing program while in jail, because she likes to write poetry and express herself. The Journey Home program has been both a great learning experience and emotional release for her while in Estrella Jail.

“I probably would have went crazy without it,” she said.

If people keep their feelings bottled up, it will get expressed in negative ways, Alix said. She said the program’s most important lesson to her was learning to deal with emotions head-on and expressing them creatively.

“I hope to think before I do from now on and focus on more positive outlets for me,” she said. “[Emotion] that I already knew that was embedded in me, but that I learned to express [during Journey Home].”
