After two competitions and two trips to Flagstaff, the ASU track and field team has enjoyed a copious amount of success.
The Sun Devils tallied 10 more event wins with seven marks that met the NCAA Championships’ qualifying standards over the weekend at the Mountain T Invitational.
Senior Sarah Stevens led the way for ASU with two automatic berths into the national meet later this season.
Her weight throw of 21.05 meters was good enough for first place and guaranteed her a spot in the NCAA Championships. Stevens also qualified in the shot put with a toss of 16.90 meters but took second behind former Sun Devil Jessica Pressley, who competed unattached.
The women of ASU had an excellent performance from senior Charonda Williams as well. The returning All-American in the 200-meter blazed her way into the ASU record books with a time of 7.33 seconds in the 60-meter dash and provisionally qualified for nationals.
Williams went on to win the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.99 seconds and helped the 4x400m relay team take first with a time of 3 minutes, 47.32 seconds.
The other provisional qualifier for the women was Stephanie Garnett, who recorded a distance of 6.20 meters in the long jump and won the event for the second week in a row.
On the men’s side, senior Donald Sanford tore up the track in the 400-meter with a time of 46.76 seconds, his second win in a row in that event. Sanford also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team that took first place.
Junior Jason Lewis joined Stevens on the list of automatic qualifiers for both shot put and weight throw after qualifying in weight throw last week and in shot put this week with a toss of 19.30 meters.
Other winners included freshman Cara Carpenter in the women’s pole vault, senior Darryl Elston in the 200-meter and 4x400-meter relay and junior Corey Phallen in the men’s pole vault.
