What's in a Christmas sweater?

Christmas brings many wonderful things to the table as well as many unfortunate items.

There are crowded malls, bad gifts, ’80s remixes of classic songs and the Christmas sweater. The Christmas sweater can seem itchy and bad enough, but it also has the power to separate tightly-knit couples.

Public relations junior Caitie Quick knows the secret behind a good Christmas sweater.

“The colors are important but what is more important is that it will get worn,” she says.

Quick is the owner of “Crochet Creations by Caitie,” a Web site devoted to her skills. She sells crocheted scarves, rugs, beanies and blankets at myspace.com/madamhook.

Quick says anything Christmas-themed belongs on a Christmas sweater, whether that is snowmen or marching reindeer. She says the more off-the-wall, the better.

“You can go crazy and no one is going to look at you funny,” she says.

Quick says the Christmas sweater also serves as a reminder.

“When the one who made your Christmas sweater is no longer around, you will have something tangible to remember them by,” she says.

Another helpful piece of advice is Quick’s story of the Sweater Curse.

She says the curse is a situation in which someone makes his or her significant other a sweater, which in turn ends the relationship.

This happened to Quick.

She made her boyfriend of late a Christmas sweater with a green collar and sleeves and red body.

“I gave my boyfriend at the time the sweater for Christmas and he broke up with me on New Year’s Eve,” Quick says.

Anyone in the middle of knitting a loved one a happy Santa sweater while reading this: STOP NOW!
