Tempe held third annual Ironman


Thousands of athletes swam, biked and ran around Tempe at the third annual Ford Ironman Arizona Sunday.

The Ironman triathlon comprises a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run. This year more than 2,650 athletes participated in the race, according to the event’s Web site.

The Pro-start races began at 6:45 a.m., and the general races began at 7:00 a.m. It officially commenced at midnight.

The 2009 first-place winner, 32-year-old Andreas Raelert, finished the race in eight hours, 14 minutes and 16 seconds. Raelert is a professional triathlete from Germany.

The Philadelphia Insurance Awards Banquet will be held at the Tempe Arts Park at 9:30 a.m. Monday for Ironman winners. The first-place winner receives $8,500 in prize money.
