Meg Burton-Cahill: District 17 Candidate for Senate

Age: 54

Party: Democratic

Occupation: Artist

Why are you running for office/reelection?

I take my job representing you very seriously. I strive to be a voice of reason and responsibility at the senate. A responsible state budget fully funds education, and as a two time graduate of asu, I understand the challenge of continuing your education and often working a job at the same time.

What experience qualifies you for the position?

I hold a bachelor of fine arts (1977) and a master of public administration degree (1998) from ASU. I effectively use the academic skills – including research and negotiation skills, skills that I gained in my studies at ASU, to serve you in the legislature. I served three terms in the Arizona state house and am completing my first term in the senate. I have been endorsed by a diverse group of stakeholders including the nurses association, police, firefighters, hospitals, Sierra Club and others. In addition, I have been endorsed by both democrats and republicans including Governor Napolitano and Tempe city councilman Ben Arredondo.

What do you think is the most important issue of the election?

Balancing the budget and protecting basic services, including protecting education funding for our public schools, community colleges, and universities. Reinstating the 1 billion dollar universities infrastructure funding will not only improve the universities but also will create construction jobs and improve our failing economy.

If elected, what would you want your relationship with ASU to be?

Close. I believe my job is to represent you to the best of my ability. In turn, I believe that your part is to make sure I know what your needs and concerns are.

Why should ASU students want to elect you?

I passionately believe that you are the future of Arizona. I have a proven track record fighting for you. The Arizona Republic (Sept. 30, 2008) said: “ (Meg) Burton-Cahill has championed education, the environment and health care…she has a reputation for studying the issues and listening to constituents…”

What is the No. 1 change you want to see in your district?

This is the best district in the state. That said, I would enjoy seeing more students vote, more students become actively involved in our community, and more students engage the thought of running for political office in their future.

What would your contributions to the community be?

I will continue to passionately bring our community values and voice to the state senate.
