Mark Thompson: District 17 Candidate for House

Age: 50

Party: Republican

Occupation: Health Care Consultant

Why are you running for office/reelection?

The state is in a current fiscal crisis. The incumbent legislators have done nothing to mitigate significant revenue shortfall. In addition, the incumbent legislators supported an “economic stimulus” package for the universities, which provided zero support for student tuition and added $84 million per year in debt for 25 years.

What experience qualifies you for the position?

I have been a small business owner for over 18 years. I am the chairman of one of the state’s largest non-profits and I have previously served in the Legislature during economic hard times.

What do you think is the most important issue of the election?

The economy.

If elected, what would you want your relationship with ASU to be?

The Arizona Republic said it best in its endorsement of me: “…[Thompson] has been an effective champion for Arizona State University.”

Why should ASU students want to elect you?

I will work diligently to promote higher education in Arizona. I will also work to support projects which should negate the persistent double digit increase in tuition since I have left office.

What is the No. 1 change you want to see in your district?

Transparency in government – at all levels.

What would your contributions to the community be?

I am very involved in the disability community. As previously stated, I am the chairman of The Centers for Habilitation and the vice president at the Tempe Association for Retarded Citizens. As your legislator, I would continue to fight for those vulnerable citizens in our community.
