The ASU volleyball team (10-8, 1-4 Pac-10) has found itself in a deep hole after a rough weekend in the California bay area drops them to the bottom of the Pac-10 Conference.
The Sun Devils have lost six of their last seven matches, dating back to Sept. 20.
ASU’s conference troubles began two weeks ago with losses to both UA and Washington. They continued this weekend against No. 5 Cal (16-1, 6-0) and No. 4 Stanford (15-2, 6-0).
ASU was beaten handily by Cal, 25-16, 25-12, 25-21, Friday night.
The Golden Bear offense caught fire, as junior outside hitter Hana Cutura tallied 14 by herself.
Sophomore Sarah Reaves led the Sun Devil offense, which was virtually nonexistent, with seven of the team’s total 21 kills.
The win was Cal’s 10th in a row, the second longest winning streak in the school’s history.
The Sun Devils didn’t fare well in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sunday against Stanford.
The Cardinal swept the Sun Devils, 25-18, 25-13, and 25-16, to record its conference-leading sixth win.
Senior outside hitter Margie Giordano and sophomore middle blocker Sara Todorovich combined for 18 of the Sun Devils’ kills, but the pair’s teammates could not generate much else due to Stanford’s blocking at the net.
Senior middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo single handedly shut down the Sun Devil attack, recording 12 blocks. She also chipped in 12 kills to record her second career double-double.
The two weekend losses now drop ASU to eighth in the conference.
