Soccer content with trip to Texas

The No. 7 Texas soccer team had every advantage this weekend.

The team was fresh and on its home field. The Longhorns also have a roster that boasts more national teamers than that of the Sun Devil women’s soccer team.

But Sunday, it didn’t matter.

ASU (3-2-2) was especially content with a 0-0 tie after two overtime periods against the hosting nationally ranked squad.

“We had an excellent tie,” coach Kevin Boyd said. “With all the challenges, a tie is a good result.”

Junior goalkeeper Briana Silvestri was strong in the net for ASU.

Because Texas’ game on Friday was cancelled, the Longhorns had a chance to scout ASU’s game against Baylor on Friday. That meant their players were fresher too.

“With all the time we spent on our legs, they should have out run us and outshot us,” Boyd said. “We got better and better all game.

“I think that shows tremendous character.”

Hurricane Ike did not play a direct role in ASU’s weekend, though Boyd said changing winds on the field affected the game in Austin.

On Friday night, the Sun Devils defeated Baylor, 1-0.

Senior forward Carla Scanniello scored her first goal of the season. The Sun Devils outshot the Bears 7-3, and Silvestri recorded her second shutout of 2008.
