The AFC just got a whole lot crazier in the past 48 hours.

First came a devastating blow to Team 18-1, who learned Monday that Tom Brady tore his anterior cruciate ligament and will be out for the season.

Instantly, publications like Sports Illustrated and ESPN anointed the San Diego not-so super Chargers the AFC favorites.

So much for that.

The Chargers announced Tuesday that they will place Shawne Merriman on injured reserve and that he will undergo season-ending surgery to repair two torn ligaments in his knee.

So now what?

The AFC is wide open, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even my Oakland Raiders might have a chance at the Super Bowl this year. I joke.

But seriously, I don’t even know what to expect this year.

From my week one observations, the Steelers have got to be the favorites.

Even with Merriman, San Diego couldn’t stop the Panthers.

The Colts look like a shell of their former selves and the Jaguars looked terrible on Sunday.

Then again, my prognostication is worthless.

Screw it, Raiders will be Super Bowl XLIII champs, and Darren McFadden will put Adrian Peterson’s rookie season to shame.
