SHOULDER TO SHOULDER: Recent ASU figures indicate enrollment rates are up 1.8 percent from last year.

ASU has set another enrollment record this year, increasing by about 1.8 percent, according to official figures.

The University has reached 64,394 students, an increase of 1,116.

The 1.8 percent increase was smaller than last year's — the 2006 fall class increased by 3.8 percent from 2005.  The 2005 fall class increased 4.9 percent from 2004, according to the Office of Institutional Analysis.

"The growth in our enrollment and the quality of our incoming class speaks to our commitment to access and excellence," said Mistalene Calleroz White, the assistant vice president of University Student Initiatives.

ASU recruitment and outreach efforts have helped form partnerships between the University and local high schools, Calleroz White said in an e-mail.

While the numbers show the University is growing, some students said ASU seems to be the same size as last school year.

"It's because there's just so many students, so it's hard to notice," said Evan Mastro, a business management junior.  "[ASU] is already packed."

Dustin Ballard, a biology junior, said the growing enrollment numbers don't surprise him.

"Lots of people from my high school already came to ASU, like half of my high school class in Cottonwood, [Ariz.]" said Ballard, who attended Mingus Union High School.

Along with a record total enrollment, ASU registered a high of 9,274 freshmen.

Of the freshmen, 265 are national scholars, including National Merit scholars, National Hispanic scholars and National Achievement scholars, according to the figures.

As for other scholarship recipients, 10 of 20 Flinn scholars enrolled at ASU this semester, the highest ever for ASU.

More than 1,800 new students this semester were President and Provost scholarship recipients, according to the figures.

There has also been a 9 percent increase in the number of minority student enrollment this semester, with Latinos experiencing the greatest increase — 15 percent — according to the figures.

UA and NAU also experienced gains in enrollment numbers.

NAU had an enrollment number of 21,352 for the fall 2007 semester, which is a 3.8 percent increase from its enrollment a year ago, according to the NAU Office of Planning and Institutional Research.

UA had an enrollment number of 37,217 for the fall 2007 semester, which is a 1 percent increase compared to its 36,805 number last fall, according to the UA Office of Institutional Research and Evaluation.
