Last time I wrote this column, I ranted about the ridiculous contract the New York Yankees gave to Roger Clemens. Now I'm going to do it some more.
Since coming back, Clemens has compiled a sparkling 1-3 record with a 5.32 ERA. If that's not justification of a prorated $28 million salary, I don't know what is.
As much as I hate to admit it, Clemens makes Daisuke Matsuzaka's contract from the Boston Red Sox look smart. Matsuzaka is making about $6.3 million this season and so far has a 9-5 record with a 3.80 ERA.
And also thanks to Clemens, he makes Arizona's own Brandon Webb look like the deal of the century.
Webb, who quietly won the National League Cy Young Award last season, is 8-5 with a 3.05 ERA. The 28-year-old is also only making $4.5 million.
Unfortunately, at the MLB All Star game July 10, you'll hear more about Matsuzaka and Clemens than Webb — even if the Dback ace gets a ticket to San Francisco.
