Met Dennis Erickson yesterday. Interviewed him in his office for half an hour. Must say, I was impressed.
One of the many interesting things Erickson said Wednesday is he looks at his job as having three parts: coaching, recruiting and selling his program to boosters, media and fans.
Though Erickson has signed just one recruiting class and hasn't had a chance to coach a game for ASU yet, how well he handles those first two aspects of his job remains to be seen.
But it's already clear Erickson can sell a program. He is like the Ronald Reagan of football coaches - experienced, well spoken, a great communicator.
Erickson rapped freely and honestly about his many coaching stops, leaving Idaho after one season, his successes and failures in the NFL, the importance of recruiting and what positions on ASU are up for grabs.
In this regard, he's very unlike his predecessor, Dirk Koetter, who seemingly felt his job description included just two aspects - coaching and recruiting.
It's clear someone with Erickson's people skills was a requirement when Vice President of Athletics Lisa Love conducted interviews for ASU's latest football coach.
