Pre-registration is gone, and sociology junior Leanne Young said that's a good thing.
"Pre-registration screwed me over big time last semester," Young said. "I had to wait until registration to get my classes anyway."
This spring, the ASU registrar's office will do away with the old pre-registration system and upgrade the ASU Interactive Web site, said Assistant Registrar Jennifer Glawson.
The new system will be online for fall 2007 registration, she said.
It will simplify the registration process and give students the chance to immediately see whether they made it into classes they want, she added.
The new procedure will tackle some of the problems that plagued pre-registration. For example, the two-week wait between pre-registration and general registration is a thing of the past, Glawson said.
That break meant that students had to wait two weeks to find out if they made it into their classes.
"You sign up for classes and you don't get the one you want, and then you are stuck with classes you don't need," said public relations freshman Hillary Anderson.
The students who pre-registered were given or refused the classes they requested based on a ranking system.
This ranking system took into account the number of credits taken, athletic involvement and membership in Barrett the Honors College, she added.
The new registration system essentially combines pre-registration and registration into one process, Glawson said.
It assigns each student an "online appointment" date when he or she can register for classes. The dates are spaced out over a month and are given in the same order as with the old pre-registration system.
Seniors will get the earliest dates in the new system, followed by juniors, sophomores and then freshmen. Athletes and Honors college members will still get to register early in the new system, Glawson said.
Upon reaching their individual dates, students are free to register as usual until the start of the fall semester, Glawson added.
"We're really excited about the change," Glawson said. "We are just trying to take advantage of some new technology."
Students can check their appointment dates on or after Feb. 19 by going to the www.asu.edu/interactive Web site.
Appointments begin March 1 and end March 30.
Other adjustments to the ASU interactive Web site include 24-hour registration times and a new "to-do list" with transcript requests and tuition bills on a central Web page, Glawson said. The other additions will roll out in March.
"There were a lot of times I tried to use the system after 9 [p.m.]," marketing freshman Brandilyn Cook said.
