Lemke wins first individual golf title

ASU senior All-American Niklas Lemke shot a 66 in the final round of the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational in Chicago to take the top spot and help the Sun Devils finish in seventh place in the 12-team tournament.

ASU shot a 44-over 884 (299-297-288) for the event as a team. ASU's final-round score tied for second best of the round, and the Sun Devils jumped Minnesota and Illinois after finishing the second round in ninth place.

Duke finished in first place after shooting 24-over 864.

Pac-10 rival Stanford finished in second place at 30-over 870 despite shooting its worst round of the tournament on the final day (295). The Cardinal edged third-place Purdue by one stroke. Northwestern and Oklahoma State rounded out the top five.

Though Stanford's top individual performance was Rob Grube in a tie for 11th, the team had five players finish in the top 15 and all six of its players place in the top 25.

Lemke's first-place finish is the first of his collegiate career. He shot a 1-over 211 (72-73-66). Lemke was in 13th place after the first two rounds of play, but his three-under-par score in the third round - the best single round performance of the tournament by one individual - put him one stroke ahead of Duke's Adam Long for the win.

But Lemke got little support from his teammates with no other ASU runners finishing in the top 20. Sophomore Steele DeWald had the second-best finish for the Sun Devils, shooting a 12-over 222 (72-72-76) to tie for 24th.

Sophomore All-American Benjamin Alvarado Holley tied for 28th after carding a 13-over 223 (75-77-71). Junior Phil Telliard finished tied for 48th after shooting a 22-over 232 (81-76-75). Sophomore Ryan Kelley shot a 30-over 240 (78-76-86) to finish in 58th place.

Next up, ASU travels to Williamsburg, Va., to compete in the NCAA Ping Preview Oct. 2-4
