An ASU student convicted in a fatal hit-and-run accident decided last Wednesday to voluntarily leave the United States and return to her home country of Kuwait instead of proceeding to court for forced deportation.
Reem Bishara, 20, told The Arizona Republic that she was eager to get back to Kuwait to see her family, including her ailing mother who is ill with leukemia.
Bishara was sentenced to 18 months probation at the Maricopa County Superior Court two weeks ago for fleeing the scene of a fatal accident September 2005. She was also previously found guilty of underage drinking in relation to the accident.
Bishara and fellow Kuwaiti ASU student Muneerah Al-Tarrah were allegedly out drinking on the night of September 13 and drove home in separate cars in the early hours of the next morning.
Al-Tarrah reportedly hit and killed 35-year-old Todd DeGain of Mesa, who was riding a motorized skateboard illegally in the street. Bishara and Al-Tarrah allegedly both left the scene.
