Olympic Sports Roundup: Seven earn regional berths for track and field


The ASU track and field team posted another solid weekend of results with seven of its members recording marks that gained them entrance into the NCAA West Region meet next month, as individuals competed at both the Arizona International in Tucson and the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.

At Stanford, Rachel Ellison and Jessie McLaughlin each earned regional berths in the 1,500-meter run.

In Tucson, Latosha Wallace (400-meter dash), Jerry Jones (400-meter dash) April Kubishta (pole vault) Cara Walker (pole vault), Jessica Pressley (discus), Sarah Stevens (discus) and Tomas Navarro (discus) were the regional qualifiers.

The Sun Devils will travel to Austin, Texas, for the Texas Relays next weekend.

Women's Tennis

The 13th-ranked ASU team was unable to keep pace with the No. 3 USC Trojans, falling 5-2 at the Marks Tennis Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday for its second straight loss. After winning the doubles point, the Sun Devils (10-6) fell in five of six singles matches.

On Friday the Sun Devils had their winning streak snapped at four, falling to the No. 16 UCLA Bruins 6-1.

Water Polo

Despite an early lead, the No. 10 ASU water polo team fell to No. 12 Long Beach State for the first time in the history of the program, 7-6 in overtime on Sunday at Long Beach State. The loss, ASU's fourth in a row, pushed the Sun Devils to 11-10 overall on the year and 3-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while LBSU improved to 11-9 overall and 3-5 in the MPSF.

On Saturday, the Sun Devils dropped a 9-6 decision at No. 11 UC Irvine.
