Name: Shana Ellis

Age: 35

Occupation: Assistant Director, Tempe Community Council

How long have you lived in Tempe? 30-plus years

Why are you running for City Council?

I can be an objective voice for citizens with one agenda: ensuring all city decisions are made solely with the best interests of our community in mind. I want to see Tempe continue to build on its successes while ensuring we don't forget about those in need across our city. I have invested my time and efforts for the last 20 years working to help the homeless, teens in need and the elderly while working directly with the City of Tempe.

What experience qualifies you to serve on the Council?

I am a life-long member of this community and have worked and volunteered in many organizations throughout Tempe. I have a Bachelor of Science in Business from ASU; I also have an ASU Master of Public Administration. I have had the opportunity to work with a broad range of community groups in Tempe and I believe this background has given me a great understanding of how city government, service organizations, the Chamber, schools, ASU and non-profits all work together in Tempe.

What is the most important issue of this campaign?

Improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods. Each neighborhood group I have met with over the last six months has unique needs…all Tempe residents want to work to make the environment in which they are living safer, better and stronger.

What kind of relationship would you hope to have with ASU?

One that is rooted in clear and open communication. The staff of ASU and the city of Tempe should continue to communicate through the many committees that exist, such as the City/ASU Joint Partnership Development Committee. Students should also have additional opportunities to interact with city representatives, as they did on the Rental Housing Task Force.

What do you think is the most important issue regarding student housing?

Giving students options for housing is very important. Tempe must continue to support public/private partnerships and work with ASU to ensure adequate student housing and to provide clear choices that best meet each student's needs.

How do you think ASU and Tempe should each do their part to address that issue?

ASU needs to continue to develop new and redevelop existing student housing on campus. Tempe needs to ensure that affordable student housing remains accessible to ASU students by working with the University.

Why would ASU students want to elect you?

I have spent a majority of my life on the campus and know it well. I began preschool at age 3 there and often went to work with my dad (who at that time was the general manager at Channel 8). My son attended preschool and kindergarten at ASU. My daughter attends preschool there now. I have been and always will be committed to ASU and its faculty, staff and students.
