Honors College Senator candidate

Name: Devin W. Mauney

Year and major: Freshman, Economics and Global Studies double major

Position running for: Senator for Barrett Honors College

What do you think the job you are running for entails? The job of a senator is really to be an advocate for the students of one's college, and beyond simply attending USG meetings, senators have the responsibility of working with University and other officials for the benefit of students at large.

What issues are you focusing on? I plan to focus on the increasing affordability of attending ASU by working toward creative solutions for saving students money on books, housing, food, parking, etc. and personally lobbying members of the Arizona Legislature to raise per-student funding for ASU. Also, I'd like to see many of the bureaucratic hurdles associated with being a student eliminated.

Why did you want to run for this position? I have experience in student advocacy and feel that there is a real need for senators willing to do more than write feckless resolutions.

What experience do you have? I served on the site-council of my high school and on the Tucson Unified School District Committee on Joint-Decision Making, I'm currently an intern for Gov. Janet Napolitano, and in 2004 I ran to be a member for the TUSD School Board in the general election.

Why are you interested in student government? Student government should offer students a structure for advocacy and activism. I want to see USG begin to do this much more often.

In your view, what is the best thing that student government did this year? That's a hard one…

The worst? USG spent so much energy fighting in-house that they had a hard time doing much for the students. If anything, students lost ground this year when it comes to affordability.

Where are you originally from? I was born in Seattle, Wash. and raised in Tucson, Ariz.

What do you like best about ASU? It's so big you can find a class, club or group dedicated to just about anything you'd want.

What do you dislike about ASU? Walking outside in August.

What has been your favorite class at ASU? Macroeconomics

What's your ultimate career goal? I'd like to work on the formation of public policy.

What do you hope to do after graduating? Go on to more school, probably a joint degree program in law and public policy.

What are your hobbies outside of school? Rowing, playing music and reading The Economist

How many facebook.com friends do you have? How many do you actually speak to on a regular basis? I have 102 facebook friends at ASU and 271 at all schools. …
