Tap's first long walk began in 1987 when Muslim troops over-ran the small village of Adok in southern Sudan. He was only 4 years old, and he walked for three months and more than 1,000 miles to reach a United Nations camp in western Ethiopia.
Three years later, he began another long walk, this time to another United Nations camp in Kenya. He spent 10 years in that camp before being granted political asylum to enter the United States. Tap is now studying for a degree in engineering at Phoenix College and his "walking" now consists of training for marathons.
He competed in the San Diego marathon, placing high enough to compete in the 2006 Boston Marathon. He competes for others like himself, the so-called "Lost Boys of the Sudan," who are trying to make new lives for themselves in this country. All of the money he raises goes to the Arizona Lost Boys of the Sudan Scholarship fund.
