Olympic Sports Roundup: Women's golf opens season in 16-team tournament

The ASU women's golf team will face a long list of competitors in its first tournament of the spring semester.

The Sun Devils will take part in the 16-team Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif., today through Wednesday. The tournament will be held at the par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Course, which spans 5,912-yards.

The field will feature seven Pac-10 teams, including intrastate rival UA, California, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington.

Fourth-year ASU coach Melissa Luellen already has her lineup set for the event, as freshman Azahara Munoz, freshman Jennifer Osborn, senior Alissa Kuczka and junior Charmaine Erasmus will take to the course for the Sun Devils.

ASU last competed in the Golf Coaches Association of America and National Golf Coaches Association Collegiate Women's Match Play Championship on Nov. 13, where it was defeated by Purdue in the championship match. The team finished tied for 8th at the NCAA championships last season.

Track and Field

Track and field finished off the weekend by setting records and provisionally qualifying for nationals. Overall, eight of the women's marks and four of the men's marks were good enough to qualify.

Leading the way for the women was junior Amy Hastings, who won the 5,000-meter run in Seattle while breaking the school record with a time of 15:45.45.

Sophomore April Kubishta joined Hastings in the record books by setting a new high in the pole vault at 4.13-meters.

Senior Ryan Warrenburg led the men by qualifying with an ASU best in the 5,000-meter run. The Devils will once again rejoin their forces as they head to the Northern Arizona Invitational next weekend.

Water Polo

ASU had an up and down weekend in the water.

The Lady Devils started the weekend off with a bang, upsetting No. 4 Hawaii 8-5 on Saturday. The Devils came from behind with a strong second half, outscoring Hawaii six goals to one.

Freshman Rowie Webster led all scorers with four goals. The win was ASU's first ever against a top-five team.

The Devils then faced sixth-ranked California and saw their perfect record fade behind a 14-7 loss. ASU gave a goal in each of the first two quarters, trailing 6-4 at half, and were unable to close the deficit.

Freshman Addison Doud led ASU with three goals.

On Sunday, the Sun Devils faced off against top-ranked UCLA and once again fell behind early and were unable to come back, losing 14-5. UCLA led 5-1 after the first quarter and kept the ASU attack stalled for the rest of the match.

Women's Tennis

The No. 16 Sun Devils continued to roll as they defeated Cal Poly, 7-0 at the Whiteman Tennis Center on Sunday to improve to 6-0 on the season. The last time ASU started 6-0 was in 2003, when it made it to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.

Sabrina Capannolo, playing in the number one spot, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Cal Poly's Samantha Waller. Roxanne Clarke won her match due to forfeit, and Kady Pooler, Wendy Pilecka, Rebecca Rankin and Jessica Leitch all won their matches in straight sets.

ASU did not drop a point over the weekend, taking out No. 43 Denver and Montana State 7-0 as well.

The Sun Devils will get their first taste of Pac-10 action on February 24, when No. 5 USC comes to town.
