Golf: Devils stand in third place, trail host UA

After the first day of competition, the ASU men's golf team finds itself near the top of the leaderboard at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson.

The Sun Devils sit in third place at 14-under and trail leader UA by nine strokes mid-way through second-round action, which was suspended due to darkness. Brigham Young University is in second at 19-under.

ASU senior Alejandro Canizares finished the day in a three-way tie for second place after 15 holes of the second round. Canizares birdied the 15th hole to put him at seven-under par for the day. He is trying to win the event for the second straight year and is two strokes behind UA's Henry Liaw for the lead.

Senior Lenny Park gained ground as the first day of competition came to a close. Three birdies on the back nine put him at three-under and into the top 15.

But the second round wasn't kind to the rest of the ASU golf team.

After finishing two-under par in the first round, ASU senior Niklas Lemke tallied five bogies in the second and is at three-over through 16 holes.

Senior Charly Simon started the second round tied for second place, but struggled to a one-over par second round and dropped to 15th after 16 holes.

Unfinished second-round holes will be completed tomorrow at 8 a.m., along with the final 18 holes.
