Wrestling: ASU pins down start

The 10th-ranked ASU wrestling team had its first taste of competition this season, dominating each of its opponents in a trio of consecutive matches at the Portland State Duals Saturday.

Overall, seven Sun Devils finished the day undefeated.

"I thought we did well," coach Thom Ortiz said. "There are some things we need to work on, but our seniors performed well for us."

ASU's three seniors, heavyweight Cain Velasquez, 197-pounder Ryan Bader and Jeremy Mendoza (125 pounds) won all three of their bouts, and each pinned their opponent in the final dual against Pac-10 opponent Portland State.

The Sun Devils led off their season with a 36-6 victory against Pacific (Ore.), an NCAA Division III team, winning nine of 10 contested bouts. Next, ASU routed NAIA No. 10 Southern Oregon 29-9, before finishing off the opening weekend of competition defeating host Portland State 39-6 in a conference dual.

ASU won all nine bouts that took place against Portland State. The only loss came when the Sun Devils forfeited the 157-pound contest.
