Safety around south-campus residence halls and Hayden Library topped concerns presented to ASU administrators at a campus security forum Tuesday night.
Officials from various departments told around 35 attendees about the safety resources they provide and fielded questions and concerns from the audience.
The forum was recommended by a committee formed in response to the shooting death of former ASU football player Brandon Falkner in March.
During the forum, theater junior Louis Farber, an Ocotillo Hall resident assistant, called for more lighting outside since he has to ensure people don't smoke within 50 feet of the hall.
"I'm sort of reluctant to send someone into a dark alley to smoke a cigarette," he told the officials.
Farber also expressed concern about recent crimes reported on south campus and said after the event he would like to see more police presence around the halls.
Vicki Coleman, associate dean of library services, expressed concerns about the safety of late-night patrons.
The ASU Department of Public Safety was recently authorized to hire 12 additional full-time police aides, said Paul Ward, vice president for University Administration and General Counsel.
Those additional aides would focus on residence halls and the central core of the Tempe campus, including Hayden Library.
Coleman said faculty who visit the library at night are also concerned about the availability of the Safety Escort Service, a late-night shuttle service run by student government.
"They're telling me the problem is you can't have students running an initiative that's that serious," she said.
