Those who say Arizona doesn't have a thriving local music scene are crazy. SPM knows Phoenix has a killer scene, and there are two bands who we'd bet our paychecks (note: we earn meager salaries) on actually going somewhere --- the Stiletto Formal and Lydia. At this point Stiletto Formal can draw 700 kids without breaking a sweat. The indie sex-core six-piece has performed its firey live show in venues all over the nation, selling its EP Masochism in the Place of Romance at every stop. Lydia is a more straightforward, earnest emo-indie band with male and female melodic vocals. The two local titans are playing the Marquee Theater, 730 N. Mill Ave., Saturday, Nov. 5, with a few friends, including the Cover Up and Goodbye Tomorrow. The show kicks off at 5 p.m. and $10 will get you in the door. Trust us, it's worth it. Nearly three years ago, Death Cab for Cutie played to a crowd of roughly 15 indie rockers in-the-know at the Modified Arts in downtown Phoenix. Now the Washington state quartet has inked to a major record label (Atlantic), released a critically acclaimed new album, Plans, (which sold nearly 90,000 copies in its first week) and are selling out medium-size venues across the nation, luring in listeners with its distinct introspective sincerity. This time around, the band is playing the Marquee Theater, 730 N. Mill Ave. The show is set for Tuesday, Nov. 8, and this time out the band is sure to have more than 1,000 fans in the audience. Tickets cost $22 and the doors open at 6:30 p.m. For details on the show scope www.luckymanonline.com.

A couple of the men from FOUND magazine are coming to the Modified Arts, 407 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix, this Monday, Nov. 7, and we're not sure what that means. Modified Arts' manager Leslie Barton sums it up nicely, though. "FOUND road warriors Davy & Peter Rothbart are headed to 51 cities this fall for a series of rowdy events," she says. "They'll bombard us with a few of the latest, greatest finds to land at FOUND HQ, Davy will read a story from his new book 'The Lone Surfer of Montana, Kansas' and Peter will dazzle with his good looks and his lovely and lewd songs based on FOUND stuff. Plus, other assorted FOUND wiz-bangs and golly-gees." SPM isn't really sure what "wiz-bangs" and "golly-gees" are, but we're damn curious. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and admission costs $5.
