Tunnel of Oppression to include student artwork

There is a thin line between one person's jest and another person's discrimination.

ASU's Tunnel of Oppression Art Gallery is a new effort, in connection with the 11th annual Tunnel of Oppression project, to address oppression.

The Tunnel of Oppression is a guided tour that has multiple stages in presenting different types of oppression through slide shows, skits and the gallery.

This year, the Tunnel of Oppression project will take place at the Memorial Union.

"We don't want to give answers," said Christine Herrera, the gallery director. "We want to raise questions about what oppression is through the gallery."

ASU's Tunnel of Oppression Art Gallery raises awareness of oppression in various art forms. This year, the gallery is hoping to present various student works in response to oppression with sculpture, painting, photography, writing and mixed media.

Last year, the gallery presented only newspaper clips and some photography submitted by volunteers.

This year, Herrera wanted the community and ASU students involved with the project.

"Anyone who has an opinion on oppression can contribute to the gallery," she said. "Oppression doesn't happen to certain people. It can happen to anyone."

Herrera points out that people's opinions differ on oppression and where it occurs.

"We want to show people that it does happen here in the states," Herrera said.

Hector Lujan Jr., vice president of publicity affairs for Tunnel of Oppression, said he believes that viewing the gallery will have an impact on everyone.

"Whether you see yourself as someone who has been oppressed or not, you will see people who have," Lujan said.

Deadline for submitting artwork for the gallery is Nov. 1.
