Swimming: Andrew, Kolozar win pentathlon

Sophomore Caitlin Andrew and senior David Kolozar took different routes to capture the pentathlon titles Saturday as the ASU men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up their preseason activities.

Andrew, the defending Pac-10 champion in the 100-meter butterfly, won her second straight pentathlon by winning three events, the 100-yard butterfly, backstroke and freestyle. She also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley and seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke, to finish with a total time of 6:08.06, the lowest time among the women in the five total events.

She won by more than five seconds over senior Sally Brown, who was followed by freshman Jen Beckberger, sophomore Ellis Schieman and senior Heidi Schmidt.

Kolozar won the men's competition with a time of 5:30.23, although he did not win any of the individual events.

Among the ASU men who competed, Kolozar finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard IM, third in the 100-yard breaststroke, and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle and backstroke, to top sophomore CJ Nuess by slightly less than two seconds.

Freshman Sean Boyle, sophomore Lucas Azevedo and senior Joey Clements rounded out the top five for the men.

The top male performer was former Sun Devil and 2008 Olympic hopeful Nick Brunelli, who swam unattached and finished the five events in 5:24.62.

The swimming and diving teams also had an intrasquad meet on Friday, where the upperclassmen took on the underclassmen in 13 events.

On the women's side, Andrew led the underclassmen to a 74-37 victory over the upperclassmen, while the men's upperclassmen held off their younger counterparts 59-54.

That meet was also the first competition for the diving teams this year. Four-time NCAA Champion senior Joona Puhakka captured both the 1- and 3-meter dives in the men's competition, while freshman Erin Hobbs defeated junior Cassidy Farwell in both of the women's dives.

The teams now will look ahead to their first dual meet of the 2005-06 season, when they travel to Hawaii Oct. 21.
