Headlines: Flaming toilet sends night classes outside

A fire in a Language and Literature Building restroom sent classes out to Cady Mall Thursday night.

"Someone ... piled toilet paper and newspaper up in [a] toilet and lit it on fire," said Terri Shafer, an ASU spokeswoman.

The fire in the second-floor men's restroom set off the building's alarm around 8 p.m. The building was evacuated for about half an hour.

But that didn't put a stop to Antonella Dell'anna's Italian 101 class, which meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:40 p.m. to 9:25 p.m.

As her students sat on benches and under street lights on Cady Mall finishing a test, Dell'anna said no one used the evacuation as an excuse to leave class early.

A test-prep course also continued outside during the evacuation.

Shafer said the fire was contained to the toilet, and no other areas sustained damage. Tempe's fire marshal is investigating the case.
