BRAVO to ASU students for not smoking - at least, not as much as other college students do. We don't know if it's Tempe's smoking ordinance, health concerns or if it's just too hot outside to smoke, but no matter the reason, we're glad students are choosing not to light up the cancer sticks.
BOO to the "cool people" for smoking more frequently than the rest of us. Smoking to look hip seems like a very junior high attitude to us. Besides, it makes you smell funny.
BRAVO to raising money for a good cause. We're proud of the 403 ASU students and faculty who participated in the Race for the Cure on the ASU Gold Team. And we're equally proud of all the other students who participated in the race on other teams that we didn't keep track of. Thanks for giving up your Sunday morning to help fight breast cancer.
BOO to ASU for instituting a percentage fee on credit card transactions. Restaurants seem to do just fine charging flat rates for each purchase, why can't the same standard apply to tuition? Especially when ASU is OK absorbing the "nominal" fee associated with the new eCheck option.
BRAVO to student innovation. We think it's awesome that ASU graduate Rebecca Finell was able to turn her class project, the Frog Pod, into a moneymaking item on store shelves now. We hope she keeps inventing.
BOO to the New Orleans police officers who beat a 64-year-old retired schoolteacher outside a Bourbon Street bar. We understand the pressures police have been under in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, but that is no excuse to punch a man until he's bleeding. And it also begs the question: If this is the type of behavior being caught on camera, what else is going on in New Orleans that's not on film?
BRAVO to ASU student Kimble Honore, who called our Talkback line at least 15 times on Thursday alone. Kimble also called several times earlier in the week, unfortunately, we lost track of exactly how many messages he left. But it is nice to hear our voicemail system getting a workout.
BRAVO to blood drives. We've noticed a bunch of groups coming on campus to get students and faculty donating blood lately; it's a trend we like.
BOO to Undergraduate Student Government President Yaser Alamoodi for poor pie selection. Taking a cream pie in the face is so post-USG election, definitely a spring thing. It's October now, the time we prepare for Halloween and Thanksgiving. The timing clearly calls for a more seasonal pie selection, like pumpkin. Or pecan.
