Oregon State and UA post upset soccer victories

No. 8 Wake Forest traveled to Corvallis last Sunday and came away with its first loss of the season when Oregon State pulled off a 2-1 upset.

"We're obviously very excited about this win," Oregon State women's soccer coach Steve Fennah said. "Wake Forest is a tremendous team, and their coaching staff does an outstanding job."

The Beavers will be hosting the Nike Invitational starting Friday. Oregon State's first game will be against Long Island, and then it will face off against Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday.

UCLA

A few very competitive games highlight the Pac-10 schedule this weekend. The first will take place when No. 6 UCLA takes on its second top four team in as many weeks when it visits No. 4 Santa Clara Friday night.

Last week, UCLA (4-1-0) played then No. 4 Penn State in a very competitive game. In double overtime, Penn State scored the only goal of the game to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 victory.

Santa Clara (4-0-1) is entering the game after a tough match, where they defeated top-ranked Notre Dame off two goals from sophomore forward Jordan Angeli.

The Bruins second game of the week is against Saint Mary's on Sunday.

California

After its game against UCLA, Santa Clara will travel to Berkeley to take on No. 8 California.

California (5-0-1) is coming off a sweep at the St. Mary's Fall Soccer Classic, where they defeated Dartmouth and Southern Methodist University.

"We attacked very well," California women's soccer coach Kevin Boyd told The Daily Californian. "It was nice to get a few more goals to allow some of the others some playing time."

The victory against Dartmouth was Boyd's 100th career coaching victory.

"Ultimately, you have to hit 100 at some point if you stay around long enough," Boyd said.

Arizona

To top off a very impressive week for Pac-10 women's soccer, UA defeated Princeton, ending a 19-game home winning streak for the Tigers.

Freshmen Gianna DeSavario and London King scored the two Wildcat goals to propel them to victory, 2-1.

"This is a tough place to play," UA women's soccer coach Dan Tobias said. "We are very pleased with coming away from this game with a win against a quality team."

UA senior midfielder Nikki Davis was named Co-Pac-10 Player of the Week after scoring a goal and tallying three assists over the weekend.

Looking ahead, No. 22 UA will host the Four Points University Plaza Arizona Soccer Classic this weekend, where it will take on New Mexico and No. 25 Utah.
