Signs warn of divebomb attacks

If you've walked around north campus lately, you might have wondered if you could, at any moment, have an unfortunate encounter with a killer bird.

Signs fastened to trees last week with caution tape have been warning passersby to avoid nesting sites.

The signs were posted by ASU's groundskeepers, who saw people being attacked by birds near University Drive and in Sun Devil Stadium, said Ellen Newell, assistant director of Facilities Management.

"When we see problems, we post [signs] so people are aware," Newell said. "They know why the bird is acting that way. They're protecting their nest."

The main culprits likely are grackles near Old Main, and ravens near the stadium, she said.

Newell said Friday that the signs with caution tape will be replaced with "more attractive" new signs to be less alarming.
