Tempe to examine rental housing

Tempe City Council approved a new ad-hoc committee May 19 at its Issue Review Session. The Rental Housing Task Force will meet as needed to address benefits and effects of rental housing in Tempe, said Mayor Hugh Hallman.

"The purpose is to help us identify and deal with various effects of rental housing, as well as benefits," Hallman said.

Hallman said rental-housing problems include overcrowding, parking and noise issues.

Members will include Councilman P. Ben Arredondo, who will represent the Neighborhood Quality of Life and Public Safety Committee, and Vice Mayor Mark Mitchell, who will represent the Technology Advancement, Tourism and Redevelop-ment Committee.

The committee will also include an undetermined number of Tempe residents, according to the mayor's office. The clerk's office is accepting applications, and City Clerk Kathy Matz said no deadline has been set.

The council will make recommendations to the mayor to appoint residents from the applications the city receives.
