Alamoodi, Widmer to be sworn in as USG leaders

After waiting nearly one month for Undergraduate Student Government election officials to verify voting results, Yaser Alamoodi and Cori Widmer will be sworn into office as USG president and vice president today at 5 p.m.

Alamoodi and Widmer were declared winners of the Undergraduate Student Government presidential and vice-presidential election in a May 24 e-mail from USG Election Director Lloyd Fraction.

Results were delayed after a complaint, filed by former candidates David Werner and Aimee Gipper, alleged that students were voting after the polls closed at 9 p.m.

Election-commission officials responded by invalidating all votes cast after the voting deadline.

Fraction said Alamoodi and Widmer still won the runoff election, even with the voting deductions.

Alamoodi said the delay of his inauguration was unfair.

"I knew we wouldn't be disqualified because the complaints were inaccurate," Alamoodi said. "It was just incredibly frustrating and stressful."

Gipper said she was frustrated by the lengthy process.

"It should not have taken two months," Gipper said. "They made the decision. We still lost."

Because of pending decisions, Alamoodi and Widmer were not sworn in at the student-government banquet earlier this month.

Alamoodi said he and Widmer were planning a special ceremony in the fall for when he said, "the people will swear us in."

Alamoodi said the inauguration would be part of a daylong event that would include a USG fundraiser and voter registration.

"We are ready to move on, finally," Alamoodi said.

"The students will definitely see a radical change in student government's culture."

Werner could not be reached for comment.
