Olympic Sports Roundup: Tumlinson leads ASU at Pac-10s


The ASU women swam into 6th place at the Pac-10 swimming and diving Championships during the weekend in Federal Way, Wash.

On Sunday, senior Trisha Tumlinson defended her title in the platform event. The 2004 Pac-10 Diver of the Year finished her career a three-time champion at the Pac-10 Championships, having won the 2004 3-meter springboard event and back-to-back platform events.

Freshman Caitlain Andrew set a new school record and became the first Sun Devil to win a butterfly event on Friday when she touched the wall at 52.64 seconds in the 200-yard event.

In diving, junior Joona Puhakka continued to excel this week as he won the

1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. Puhakka became the first diver in Pac-10 history to win the 3-meter event three times and also became the first diver to ever win both events in three consecutive years.

The men's ASU swim team heads to Long Beach, Calif., Wednesday for its conference championships.

Wrestling

The ASU wrestling team sits in second place after the opening day of the Pac-10 Championships in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

ASU (48 points) trails Cal Poly (53) for the team lead.

Six Sun Devils qualified for the semifinals, led by junior heavyweight Cain Velasquez, who won both of his Sunday matches. With the wins, Velasquez extended his unbeaten streak to 16 matches.

Still alive for ASU are junior Jeremy Mendoza (125 pounds), sophomore Brian Stith (157), freshman Patrick Pitsch (165), junior C.B. Dollaway (184) and junior Ryan Bader (197).

Water polo

The No. 18 ASU water polo team snapped a four-game losing streak with a win over Marist on Saturday in the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Sun Devils jumped to a 7-1 halftime lead and never looked back. Sophomore Ashley Bower scored four goals in the win. This season, Bower has a team-high 13 goals.

Sophomore Katie Hedley and junior Tessa Wyborny added two goals apiece. Junior Elizabeth Houck made nine saves in the win.

Golf

The ASU men's golf team is in the middle of the pack entering today's second round of the Puerto Rico Classic. The Sun Devils stand six shots back of tournament-leader Georgia, who carded a 10-under par 278 Sunday.

Junior Alejandro Canizares and senior Kendall Critchfield led the Sun Devils and enter today's round tied for seventh at 3-under par 69.

Florida junior James Vargas leads the tournament through 18 holes at 7-under par 65.

ASU senior captain Jesse Mueller stands at even. Fellow seniors Niklas Lemke (5-over par 77) and Pat Moore (2-over par 74) will hope to rebound in today's second round, which is scheduled for 7 a.m. at the par 72, 6,945-yard, Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort and Country Club in Puerto Rico.

Gymnastics

Coming off its UNO's Classic victory last weekend, the ASU gymnastics team lost to unranked Stanford Friday at Burnham Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif.

ASU (6-5, 1-5 Pac-10) scored a season-low 47.4 on vault and posted its second-lowest team total on bars (48.35).

Stanford's Natalie Foley won the all-around with a score of 39.025. ASU sophomore Cassandra Jusino took second.

Junior Ashley Kelly finished a disappointing fifth.

The Sun Devils will host Penn State on Mar. 4 at

7:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. It will be ASU's final home meet of the 2005 season.

Men's tennis

The ASU/UA rivalry was rekindled on the tennis court Friday afternoon when UA defeated the Sun Devils, 5-2.

UA tallied its first point by winning the opening two doubles matches. The ASU tandem of senior Clinton Lechter and freshman Mike Beatty was able to win the final doubles match of the day, 9-8(2).

Two of the first three singles matches went to ASU

(4-2), but then things fell apart as it dropped the final three to UA (6-4).

The team will return to action March 9 when Memphis visits Tempe.

Women's tennis

No. 25 Oregon received a rude welcoming from the ASU women's tennis team Saturday afternoon when the Sun Devil squad swept the Ducks, losing only one set the entire day.

Senior Lauren Colalillo and sophomore Kady Pooler started the rout by defeating the 15th-ranked duo of Daria Panova and Dominika Dieskova 8-4 in the doubles competition.

The match-winning point for ASU came from sophomore Wendy Pilecka, who had a strong performance and won 6-2, 6-4 in the singles competition.

ASU returns to action next Friday against No. 17 California.
