Want to know a little more about the guys (and girl) whose names will be appearing in this section? Here's the breakdown:
Brian Gomez, sports editor
Much like Sherdrick Bonner and Hunkie Cooper, I have one last chance to prove my worth. I'm not going to compare myself to an Olympic swimmer. I'm just a cog in the well-oiled machine that is The State Press sports desk.
Jeff Hoodzow, assistant sport editor, columnist
After an unfulfilling run at the Web Devil, it's time to head back home to the sports desk, where I am assistant sports editor. If you're looking for the inside info on ASU athletics, coupled with random "Smokey and the Bandit" references, you'll find your guy every Tuesday in the "Tao of Zow."
Matt Reinick, sportswriter
Back for my farewell semester at The State Press, I'm hoping the ASU men's basketball team goes on a run so I can break out my shoes for the Big Dance. In the meantime, I'm still working on my golf game so I can join the PGA Tour by 2007 and marry Elin Nordegren's twin sister by '09. This will be, by far, the most fun and best-published sports section The State Press has ever seen.
Kyle Odegard, sportswriter
Since we have limited space to write with so many staffers on board this semester, I want to get across one simple message. I'm not going to talk about what sport I'm covering (baseball) or any expectations. All I have to say is this: Watch the Phoenix Suns. They're amazing.
Jeremy Cluff, sportswriter
My rookie season at The State Press was grueling and intense but unforgettable. My passion for sports reached new heights, and my love for writing increased every day. As I begin my second campaign on the sports staff, I must continue moving forward. For the "Cluffer," there will be no sophomore slump.
Kim Taylor, sportswriter
After a month in the frozen tundra, it's good to return to the Harvard of the Southwest. I'm a redshirt senior with an unhealthy obsession for the Green Bay Packers. This semester isn't going to be about glorifying any one writer because no single person is bigger than the franchise.
Mark Saxon, sportswriter
After a brief stint on the police beat, I waved my no-trade clause for a chance to join a more classy organization. Unfortunately, the Boston Globe balked after the results of my physical, and now I spend my days covering ASU's breaststrokers and links putters.
Brian Knapp, sportswriter
What's up, ASU? I'll be your source for ASU wrestling, water polo, some women's hoops, and yes, the Arizona Rattlers. I'm a journalism junior, and my favorite sport is Arena Football. Two pieces of advice: Go to class and read the sports page. To all ASU fans, stand behind your Sun Devils and represent your school with pride.
Tom Kelley, stringer
I am a junior majoring in justice studies, and I am originally from Chicago. I will be reporting on ASU men's and women's track and field. This is my first semester as a sportswriter for The State Press, and I am really looking forward to it.
Mike Fowler, stringer
Despite the pseudo-acclaimed ramblings of 1980s frontman Sammy Hagar, I feel that there is, in fact, more than one way to rock. I refuse to be pigeonholed by a man who made his career on a song about his refusal to drive the contemporary speed limit of the '80s.
