FROM STAFF REPORTS

The ASU wrestling team remained perfect in Pac-10 play over the weekend with a sweep of the Oregon schools. ASU overpowered Oregon State 29-9 and shook off Oregon 23-15.

Oregon surprised ASU early, taking two of the first three matches. The Sun Devils (7-6-1, 4-0) quickly responded when 149-pound senior Patrick Williams won his match by major decision. Junior Brian Stith (157 pounds) then pinned freshman Stewart Bogart in 4 minutes, 9 seconds.

ASU put the match away when 285-pound junior Cain Velasquez won a major decision over sophomore Chris Dearmon.

The Sun Devils took seven of 10 matches from Oregon State, highlighted by 165-pound freshman Patrick Pitsch's 3-2 decision over senior Matt Ellis. The win extended ASU's lead to 10-0, and the Sun Devils never looked back, leading by as many as 26 points.

ASU dropped the final two bouts, but 125-pound junior Jeremy Mendoza's pin over sophomore Eric Stevenson sealed the victory.

Track and field

The ASU men's and women's track and field teams continued their winning ways over the weekend, placing all three participants in the top three in the NAU Multi-Events meet at Flagstaff.

Sophomore Joshua Kinnaman won the men's heptathlon, provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships. In last year's outdoor event, Kinnaman finished in 12th place.

Sophomore Ryan Ehlar took second in the men's heptathlon. Elhar finished second to Kinnaman in six events. The pair tied in the pole vault.

Freshman Alana Waterford placed third in the women's pentathlon, highlighted by a first-place finish in the high jump. She also finished third in the 800m and the 60m hurdles.

The Sun Devils return to Flagstaff on Saturday for the Mountain T Invitational.

Women's tennis

The ASU women's tennis team cancelled its Saturday match against No. 24 New Mexico due to thunderstorms. The match will not be rescheduled.

After nearly four hours, ASU coach Sheila McInerney called the match because of the wet courts. The Sun Devils travel to Texas on Saturday.
