Baseball: Alumni game kicks off season

It's a battle of the old versus the new when the No. 9 ASU baseball team welcomes a host of ex-Sun Devils to the annual Alumni Game, 1 p.m. Saturday at Packard Stadium.

Current minor-leaguers Jeremy West, Chris Duffy, Andrew Beinbrink and Steve Garrabrants highlight the alumni roster. Former major-leaguers Kevin Romine and Mike Benjamin are also scheduled to suit up.

The game will be a tune-up for ASU, which is slated to host No. 14 Long Beach State on Jan. 28 to kick off its season.

"We're looking at this as an opportunity for our guys to play a game against some good competition," assistant coach Jay Sferra said. "It's another stepping stone toward the season."

The game will pit Kevin Romine against his son Andrew, who is a freshman shortstop for ASU. Senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch will also be competing against a relative as his brother Chip is on the alumni squad.

The Sun Devils will follow the alumni exhibition with an intrasquad game on Sunday in preparation for the regular season schedule.

"We're going to try to get to down to the Saturday, Sunday routine like it's a regular game day," Sferra said.

Former players not participating, but expected to be in attendance, include Dustin Pedroia, Willie Bloomquist, Andre Ethier, Casey Myers and current Kansas City Royals hitting coach Jeff Pentland.

Junior left-hander Brett Bordes will get the start for ASU.
