Editorial: Boos and Bravos

BRAVO to ASU President Michael Crow for turning 49 years old Monday. The best part was the surprise party Thursday where Crow celebrated with friends, cake and wieners at Dave's Dog House.

BRAVO to National Coming Out Day. We're glad to see the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community is strong. We also applaud the brave folks who used the day to come out.

BOO to the Commission on Presidential Debates for not allowing alternate party candidates into the debates. Libertarians, Independents and Green Party candidates deserve a shot at the presidency. Since when did the marketplace of ideas become a two-shop stop?

BOO to Wal-Mart. The store chain won the right to build a store in Mexico less than a mile from the ancient Teotihuacan pyramids. If there's one thing we've always wanted, it's the combination of ancient civilizations and cheap jeans. Nice going Wal-Mart: not only are your prices low, so are your morals.

BRAVO to Facilities Management for responding so quickly to last weekend's 'W 04' prank in the grass on Hayden Lawn. The off-colored grass spelled a political message, and ASU did the right thing in mowing it down right away. However ...

BRAVO to the prankster for being so original. We wrote earlier this week, and still agree, that the stunt didn't win any voters, but we must concede the prank was unique. This isn't an invite for more pranks, but it's nice to see that there is still a little mischief in ASU students. Wow, all this talk about pranks reminded us it's been a while since we've visited 'A' Mountain.

BOO to Bob Schieffer, the CBS television host who will moderate the debate at ASU on Wednesday. In an interview on "The Daily Show," Schieffer was asked where the debate would be, and he said, "Phoenix." Nice Bob, we're counting on you to ask hard-hitting questions, yet you don't know the name of the city you'll be in? And FYI, that's T-E-M-P-E.

BOO to the burglars who stole computers, sports memorabilia and other possessions from our sportswriter Brian Gomez's house. The computers are replaceable, but not the autographed baseballs and footballs.

BRAVO to the Major League Baseball playoffs. The playoffs are a great escape from all of the attention on the debate. However, we looked at the playoff brackets and noticed something missing ...

BOO to the Diamondbacks for going absent without leave since, oh, about May.
