Briefs: Canizares captures medalist honors

Canizares captures medalist honors: Junior Alejandro Canizares captured medalist honors Tuesday in the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge, leading the No. 17 ASU men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Bandon Dunes Golf Course in Bandon, Ore. Canizares fired a 2-under 142 for his fourth career victory, pulling him into a tie for sixth on ASU's all-time wins list.

Baseball commitments: Scottsdale Chaparral High School first baseman Ike Davis, considered the state's top prospect, has verbally committed to the ASU baseball team.

Davis was the MVP of last year's AFLAC All-American High School Baseball Classic. Other AFLAC All-Americans who have committed to ASU include Allen (Texas) High School catcher Preston Paramore, Justin-Siena High School third baseman Brett Wallace and Monte Vista High School pitcher Jeff Lyman.

Red Sox one game away: Get ready, Boston. There's no other outcome now: Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez and the Red Sox will either win the World Series or add another historic collapse to their legend.

Martinez made his long-awaited Series debut a special one, bailed out when Ramirez and David Ortiz did as much damage with their arms as bats. Boston cruised past St. Louis 4-1 Tuesday night for a 3-0 lead.

Derek Lowe will try to finish it off tonight, with Jason Marquis starting Game 4 for St. Louis.

Martinez threw seven innings of shutout ball, holding the Cardinals to three hits and retiring his final 14 batters.

Ramirez put Martinez ahead with a first-inning homer, and held it, helped by superb defense and shaky base running.
