Briefs: Baseball team gets verbal commitment


Brett Wallace, a senior third baseman at Justin-Siena High School in Napa, Calif., has made a verbal commitment to the ASU baseball team and is expected to receive a scholarship for the 2006 season, The Napa Valley Register reported.

As a junior, Wallace batted .526 with six doubles, three triples, 11 home runs and 34 RBIs, leading Justin-Siena to a 25-2 finish. The left-hander had a 1.103 slugging percentage and a .676 on-base percentage.

Women's golf heads to Honolulu for tourney: The ASU women's golf team starts play in Honolulu today, looking for its third victory in a row, as it takes part in the Kent Youel Invitational.

The Sun Devils will be without freshman Louise Stahle, who has been their best player this season. Stahle was given the tournament off after she helped her home country of Sweden to a first place finish in the World Women's Amateur Championships in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, over the weekend.

ASU doubles team advances to ITA finals: The ASU women's tennis doubles team of Joslynn Burkett and Wendy Pilecka went 4-0 in its first four matches to advance to the championships of the ITA Women's Western Regional Championships in San Diego. On Monday, they faced UCLA's No. 2- ranked duo of Riza Zalameda and Daniela Bercek. No results were available at press time.

On the men's side, the doubles team of senior Andy Colombo and junior Daniel Davies advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Tennis Championships in Malibu, Calif., before falling to UCLA's No. 3- ranked duo of Alberto Francis and Chris Kwinta, 8-3.
