Debate ousts events from Gammage

To make way for presidential debate preparations, musical performances usually held at Gammage Auditorium will end this month.

The final event held at Gammage Auditorium will be the ASU Wind Ensemble, composed of woodwind musicians, on Sept. 28.

Kariann Medina, spokeswoman for ASU Public Events, said programming will begin again immediately following the presidential debate.

Gammage Auditorium will also go through some minor renovations before the debate such as carpet replacement, landscaping and other minor touchups.

Medina said they "are not doing special improvements but are taking care of already scheduled maintenance."

The presidential debate has coincided with other events normally held during that time and has caused a shift of schedule.

Gary Quamme, facilities and event coordinator for the School of Music, said orchestra and band rehearsals have been moved from Gammage Auditorium to the Student Recreation Complex gyms.

The rehearsals are normally held in the auditorium due to their large sizes, he said.

Rebecca Bell, secretary for the School of Music, said there would be events during the two weeks the auditorium is closed.

Quamme said concerts scheduled on dates when Gammage is closed for the debate would be held off campus.

"It's a little bit difficult because of the number of events we have generally in October," he said.
