On this day, exactly 22 years ago, two great young Americans were born.
August 23rd marks the birthday of U.S. swimming sensation Natalie Coughlin. After the last week of competition in the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, the lovely Coughlin's five medals are the most for any U.S. female in the games, as she has cemented herself as one of the greats in Olympic history. This after a mind-boggling collegiate career at California-Berkeley that saw Coughlin named NCAA swimmer of the year three times.
Also 22 years young today is yours truly, one of the greatest collegiate journalists in the country. As I enter my senior year at ASU, I have worked at the nationally recognized State Press since my first day of college, have had over 400 stories published and was one of eight students in the nation to receive a sports journalism scholarship by the NCAA.
A day of champions no doubt. But who has the more impressive resume? Let's leave it at this. While Natalie spends her 22nd living the high life in Athens as gold sways across her chest, I am spending mine in the basement of the Matthews Center, putting together tomorrow's sports section.
