ASU Briefs: Diving, track and tennis

Diving

Two ASU All-American divers claimed victories Thursday in both events of the NCAA Zone E Diving Regional in Oklahoma City.

Sophomore Joona Puhakka won the men's 3m dive with a score 70 points higher then his nearest competitor. The win was the second straight at the Zone E Regional for Puhakka.

Junior Gordon Blukis finished 10th with a score of 453.00 and was followed by fellow junior Thomas McCrummen in 11th.

Junior Trisha Tumlinson won the 1m title with a score of 564.70 while senior Jessica Stenson placed 11th and freshman Cassidy Farwell finished 18th.

Track and field

Ten members of the ASU track and field team will travel this weekend to Fayetteville, Ark., for the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Both 4x400m relay teams, along with Amy Hastings (5,000m), Jacquelyn Johnson (pentathlon and mile relay) and Brandon Glenn (pole vault) will be competing in the two-day event.

The men's relay team of Jason Barton, Steve Fitch, Seth Amoo and Domenik Peterson are riding the momentum of their performance of 3:03.43 in the 4x400m relay last weekend that not only set a new school record, but broke the collegiate record that Oklahoma set in 1997 of 3:04.25.

They were honored as Trackshark.com Male Athletes of the Week for their record time.

Men's Tennis

The No. 22 ASU men's tennis team will travel to California to take on No. 4 USC and No. 8 UCLA to begin Pac-10 play. The Sun Devils will face the Trojans today and the Bruins on Saturday.

The Sun Devils (4-5) have played both teams this season, defeating the Bruins, 5-2, and falling to the Trojans, 6-1.

Senior Chris Stewart will have a chance to make it a perfect 2-0 record against No. 6 ranked singles player Tobias Clemens of UCLA.

ASU is in the midst of a five-game losing streak, with their most recent losses coming at the hands of No. 18 Pepperdine and Washington in the ASU Quadrangle.

Women's Tennis

The women's tennis team will be playing the No. 11 Trojans today and the No. 12 Bruins on Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center to open Pac-10 play.

ASU (3-5) faced UCLA on Feb. 20, falling 5-1. Doubles were not played in the match due to rain. Senior Cindy Sureephong was the only player to get a win for the Sun Devils in the match.

The Sun Devils' first matchup against USC, set for Feb. 21, was postponed by the weather. The match will not be made up because it did not count towards Pac-10 standings.

The team has dropped three-straight matches overall, the last two on March 5 and 6 against Stanford and Cal.

Stanford swept ASU, 7-0, and the Golden Bears won 5-2.
