Briefs: A new coach, ASU pride, Softball back in action

New Coach: ASU head football coach Dirk Koetter announced the hiring of Brent Meyers as the Sun Devils' new offensive line coach. Meyers, who coached under Koetter at Boise State (1998-1999), had previously served as offensive line coach at Utah (2003) and Washington (2000-2002).

Myers replaces Jeff Grimes, who has been on ASU's coaching staff since Koetter arrived in Tempe in 2001. Grimes, who also held the title of running game coordinator, resigned to take a job as Brigham Young University's offensive line coach in order to spend more time with his family.

Soccer's LePeilbet to play for America: Former ASU All-American Amy LePeilbet has been named one of six defenders to play for the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team that will attempt to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece. LePeilbet will join such stars as Mia Hamm and Heather Mitts. The team will participate in a qualifying tournament in Costa Rica at the end of the month.

LePeilbet made her first career start for the national team at the Four Nations Tournament last week in China, and is one of two 21-year-olds on the squad, along with North Carolina's Cat Reddick.

While at ASU, LePeilbet led the Sun Devils to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of her final two years, and a No. 14 national ranking her senior season in 2003.

Softball to take on Broncos:

After a three-day layoff, the ASU softball team is back in action tonight against Western Michigan at Farrington Stadium.

The No. 20 Sun Devils are coming off a 2-3 weekend, dropping their record to 5-3 overall.

The contest will be the season opener for the Broncos, who went 30-24 last season, and won the MAC West title for the first time. The team is projected to finish second in the conference this year.

Senior pitchers Jaymie Voss and Laura Stewart lead Western Michigan as both players were All-Conference selections last year.

ASU will start sophomore Desiree Serrano (2-0) on the mound against the Broncos.

Western Michigan was a late addition to the ASU schedule. The Broncos were added after they entered the Fiesta Bowl Tournament to be played this weekend.

The game will be the first of seven in the next four days for the Sun Devils.
