Devil Dish: 'SI' overlooks intensity of ASU/UA rivalry

Sports Illustrated On Campus recently ranked the top college rivalries, and the Sun Devils and Wildcats weren't included.

Instead, the article discussed the "bitter" rivalry between the rowing teams at Harvard and Yale.

Give me a break. Did they not hear about the ASU football team attacking UA players who danced on the Sparky logo in Sun Devil Stadium? How could they ignore ASU fans taunting former UA basketball star Steve Kerr by chanting the name of the terrorist group that killed Kerr's father?

Taunting Kerr was despicable, as was dancing on Sparky - although not on the same level - but that is what this rivalry has become: nasty.

Our rivalry games may not draw national attention, but that doesn't matter. The State Press file photo showing a female UA student with a broken nose from a fight in the stands at a 1987 football game proves that our rivalry is just as bitter and fiery as the best in college sports.
